KJV:
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
NKJV:
If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
NIV:
If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even their own life, such a person cannot be my disciple.
Interpretation:
Jesus says that those who come to Him must hate their family and even their own life. Otherwise, they cannot be His disciples. The verse uses strong language to show that following Jesus must be our first priority. We must love Jesus more than we love anyone else, even our closest family members. The word hate here means to love less, not to have hostile feelings. Jesus requires complete commitment to Him. Those who put family or self before Jesus cannot truly follow Him.
